Stacey Bear concocts found objects and her original paintings into whimsey boxes, vignettes, dioramas and collages with an aplomb that leaves one with a sense of wonder. She has a wickedly sharp wit and a refined aesthetic. Mixed with her natural talent, these take her work far beyond my expectations each and every time a new piece arrives from her York, Pennsylvania studio. Her Momentos are nothing less than hauntingly beautiful flights of fancy, with an edge that comes from her special brand of humor and gutsy sense of style. She craves antiques and the hunt for them, so her work is peppered with vintage bits of yesterday, castoff trims and textiles, bits of ribbon, buttons, ephemera, old baubles and more. Her painting is unparalleled, with a misty lushness that is devastatingly charming in its storytelling. I admire Stacey and it thrills me to call her a great gal pal.
